Thread: Stripped flywheel bolt holes...

So a little while ago I bought a Fidanza flywheel from another forum member. I knew it could use a fresh friction disk which I planned on swapping anyway. Well I tore apart the car Wednesday to throw in the Fidanza as well as an xtreme pressure plate that I picked up. Turned out my 6 puck was pretty much toast after my last trip to the track. I ordered a new one and it came yesterday. Torqued down the flywheel and began aligning the clutch and tried to bolt down the pressure plate, only 4 screws tightend. Turns out one hole was drilled and tapped for a M10x1.25 screw and another was just stripped.

Have any of you guys encountered this problem? I'd like to get this installed soon. I wasn't sure if I should bump up the size of the stripped hole to the same size as the bigger one or have both damaged holes helicoiled for the stock screw. Any opinions/suggestions appreciated. TIA!

Take both the flywheel and PP to a machine shop and go up to the next size bolt. I would only do it in the spots that are bad and try not to over tighten when installing. This is probably what the previous owner did which caused the stripping out of the threads in the flywhl. $.02

Yeah more than likely. I wish he warned me before I sent payment. Thats what I get though for buying used parts.

My only concern was having a screw thats a little bigger than the rest may throw off the balancing or anything like that. I do like 9K.

Mr. Armstrong himself has witnessed stripping of flywheel bolt inserts in Fidanzas So has Jen36.

That's two that I've personally seen, and now three that I've heard of. Someone needs to make a better flywheel.

I did do that once, and I drilled/tapped out the holes on the opposite side as well to balance the unit out. lasted 4 years, then the bolts backed themselves out and made a brutal bad imbalance. From experience of my own demise, take it to a machine shop or helicoil the bish'. It's worth spendign the extra cash than having the flywheel come off the crank in 4 years

Did you drill and tap the actual crank or the holes for the screws that hold down the pressure plate? I'm going to drop it off at the shop either later today or Monday and try to have it fixed. Hopefully I can have it on before the upcoming meet. Really not trying to rig something spinning at 9,000rpm's let alone i'll be throwing extra abuse at the car with the bottle. Hopefully its repairable. Thanks guys.

oh - the holes on the crank.

I did strip the holes on the flywheel at a seperate time as well, just got a longer bolt, locktite'd the crap out of it, added a lock washer, one on each side to balance it, and left it - been driving on that setup for 6 months, no issues.
