I feel the axle seal ID technique is the easiest when the axles are off. Even when they are on you can still see that the drivers side is bigger.
Where are you located? If you have a pull your own part junkyard around you can find a transmission for less than 350. I mean the pull it yards are 50/50 but eh you say you dont really need the transmission.
I know here in Atlanta a trans runs 62 bucks including the core charge. I found a B13 Se-R at the yard a few years back. The transmission quickly became mine, lol. I still haven't tried it out to see if it works, but for 62 dollars I couldn't pass it up.
