That is a good point I wasn't thinking that the hub actually centers the wheel! I assumed the reference was to the material being taken off non-uniformly.

The lug nuts most likely won't center the wheel very well however the taper is useful for that, perhaps it will be alright on the car, but getting it on the balancer straight would be next to impossible.

you can get away with centering the wheel via the studs/nuts on an aluminum wheel. but mounting a steel wheel on a car with the studs and lugs taking all the weight would be an accident waiting to happen, it would flex soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much.

hmmm. Didn't think of that.

I did some light research, and it seems the VW crowd does it all the time, though. ?
