Thread: Synthetic Oil Questions

Okay, I'm thinknig about switching over from conventional motor oil to synthetic, but just need some info:

1. What makes it so much better? What brand do you prefer?
2. How much more is it per quart on average than conventional?
3. Did you actually notice any difference?

3. i only noticed a diff. when the oil was fresh. after it started to break down felt like dino oil.

I think Mobil 1 is great. They were the first with synthetic. I love it and run it in everything!

My car has 236k on it i use castrol syntec in it never had any problems with it for a few bucks more synthetic oil is definately the way to go esp if your into "spirited driving" gas mileage gets better too

it depends on the motor you are running the oil in but mobil 1 is good oil, personally Eneos is extremely good oil very expendsive around 80.00...if it were a performance motor i wouldnt run anything but eneos, if its just a switch from one to another then mobil 1 is good

Synthetic oil provides better lubrication on the parts, hence better protection. I didn't notice much of a difference when I switched, but it stands up to track abuse really well.

Amsoil for the turbo, German Castrol for the VE when I had it.

I'd first get a black-stone report on your next oil change and see what they say.

Ive been toild, if you have a higher mileage car, like 100000 mi, then switch to synthetic from Dino oil, it can actually be harmful, breaking down seals and such.. has this happened? is it possible? Based on that assumption I was gonna stick to reg oil, as I just bought a car with 89k miles. What do you guys think?

I bought my ser with 200k, when I switched to mobile1, I got 50 leaks all over the motor. I was leaking from my oil pan, oil pump, all upper seals, cam seals, dizzy...ect.

Nothing crazy but it was there almost within a week (my DD). I was leaking about 1 quart a month.

I eventually retired the motor after changing the crank seal on both sides and still having too many leaks.

What happens is the better additives in the oil help to break down the crud that has worked it's way into small cracks or gaps in your seals. Then, once the cracks are cleared, you get oil seepage....

I have mobile 1 in my ve from dre, not one leak yet...1 year and counting DD'd.

Down here at school there are allot of master mechanics that work in our motorsports department, they swear by Amsoil and say mobile 1 isn't terrible but isn't the best out there for the price......your pick.

Lastly, one of the largest benefits about synthetic is it resists changes in viscosity due to cold weather. Helps out with cold starts, no matter the climate.
