Thread: Header Wraps

After reading that I got interested in some Header wraps. What do you guys think? Any good/bad experiences?

Hmm, not sure. Exhaust gas might have a lower density at a higher temperature but it also creates more pressure (good in the case of a turbo I guess?). If someone backed that up with experimental evidence I might believe it.

Although it's always a good thing to cool your engine bay down a bit!

i agree too much heat in engine bay can increase intake air temps, which obviously isnt a good thing be it turbo or naturally aspired

header wrap is tried and true.........keeping the air hot in the exhaust stream keeps velocity high and scavaging at optimum levels. why do you think they make ceramic coated headers? heat is a byproduct of energy.........aka heat is waisted energy. contain the heat (in the exhaust system) and you produce more power. you want to get as much heat out of the engine as you can........when you have a naken header kicking ungodly amounts of heat up into the engine bay you are robbing power from the engine by heating it up more.

[url]www.prosportgauges.com[/url] sells pretty cheap header wrap. only problem is that, unlike what the web site maker claims, it is known to cause rust. the heat is stuck in the exhaust and causes condensation....condensation causes rust......you get the picture. however if you have a stainless steel header/exhaust system GO TO TOWN!.

I've also heard that wrapping headers can shorten their life span and cause cracks around the welds. Is that true? I have a stainless header BTW.

It is possible because there is less heat going away from the metal, but if its a quality header to begin with there really shouldnt be any problems.

I have only used it on turbo manifolds and never had problems, but multiple friends of mine have used it on their header with no problems as well.

Yeah iv heard they will cause rusting faster due to condensation. As classicaddict stated. But even knowing that, ima still wrap my fujis.

stainless steel headers cool down VERY VERY rapidly..........i would say they are cool to the touch in nearly 30 minutes after shuting off the engine. that would cause cracks more than keeping the heat inside the header with heat wrap.

Well eBay has them at a good price too, but these come with stainless steel zip ties, so I think I'm sold
