Transmission welding
Ok lets look at a picture below that I stole from MotoIQ - Features, Tech, Projects, Columns, Forum, My Garage. See where Mike welded the transmission to stop breakage in the normal area? Why not weld up the areas that I marked in white? If you weld 1 section wouldn't the stress that causes breakage just shift to a weaker part of the transmission?

They are there for a reason, heat dispersion. Kind of like fins on the 98-99 on the side of the transmission.

The reason you want to weld that specific one is because it is a long piece without any fins, if it was divided to smaller blocks then it wouldn't require being welded.

it has nothing to do with heat dispersion.


The casing has those molds there for strength. If you were to solid weld them and fill them with alloy you will find the case would no longer have any flex - hence making it more brittle and prone to cracking through the rear mounting holes.

As it is now, the diff casing cracks from the first top bolt hole down into the diff. They way hes welded it will stop that - but also transfer more stress to the lower bolts.


If you also welded the whole lot - you will probably find you will be snapping mount bolts as well.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the information Autech.

As my transmission was off the other week I stood there and looked at them too, couldn't think of any reason why except for the "breathing" holes, reducing weight, saving on metal.

Dam so we weld it to stop it from flexing, but if we weld to much it makes it more fragile in the process, dam this is confusing......()

Actually I was thinking of filling the holes with epoxy resin.

That's a relief to hear, I also heard JB weld can be used I wasn't too interested in welding it because I do not have access to a machine to surface the area. Though welding is the more permanent and preferred choice of champions.

JB Weld is not the best glue unfortunately. It is extremely hard and very resistant in compression but does not have as much torsional or tension strength. If I had a choice I would definitely weld the case.
