quick trans question
Since my blackberry does not like the search function ill make this quick, my 1996 200sx se-r 5-speed daily driver with 199000 miles and climbing rapidly (between 900 and 1500 miles a week), the transmission is starting to make a slight whining noise at low rpms while decelerating and traveling on flat ground, should I change the gear oil and what would be the best gear oil to use for a dd I usually floor it up to 80-85 on the highway and it stays there for 58miles each way to and from work, and usually heavy accelerating around town, any help is appreciated. mike

Mine makes a whining sound as well, but only when accelerating (when I can hear it) I don't pay it much attention, tbh. I'm using Shockproof Heavy, though.

I wouldn't worry too much about the whine. However if it's been about 60k miles since your last fluid change I'd put some Redline MT-90 in there and make it happy.

LMAO that's funny Ben. I haven't even put 5K miles on it since I had the car!

Another question I'm only getting 22-24 mpg all highway I'm at 4000rpm at 80ish mph in 5th gear with the stock tranny what would be a better trans to use to have lower rpms on the highway, would the b15 6 speed be a good choice if it fits

QR 6 speed is best for highway driving. P11 is second best with longer gears. Just did this swap myself, yesterday. HUGE difference from a B14 trans to a P11 trans.

Which swap would be more straight forward and easy to find parts for (axles, tranny, whatever else is needed), how much did you pay for the p11 trans and what axles did you use and what's your rpms going 80ish (if you go that fast)

The P11 is far easier to swap in than the QR 6spd. You only need the driver's side LSD axle from a B14 for the swap (if you go with a P11 LSD), as well as being able to convert the hydro clutch arm to a cable clutch arm. You can use your exisiting clutch arm from the B14 tranny. Just need a few punches to punch out the retaining pins from both clutch arms.

Download my Sr20 Tranny worksheet from the How To section. You can input your tire sizes and know exactly where you'll be at 80mph. With my wheel setup (205x45x16), I'm at 80mph at 3650rpm. Cruising at the speedlimit (65mph here) I'm just below 3000rpm. With stock B14 wheel setup, you'd be at around 3650rpm as well at 80mph.

The cost of the tranny varies depending on where you get it from. Anywhere from $600 from a junkyard to around $1200 if you buy it from someone on the forum. All depending on mileage, etc. I paid between $600 and $1200 for mine.
