Help me identify this noise PLEASE!
Recently had the motor re-built after frying a piston ring a few months back. Other than a cometic headgasket and arp head studs, the motor is all stock gti-r internals. The head just has BC stage 2 cams.

Since the rebuild, the motor has had the ticking noise evident in the video below, and both Dustin (Savage) and I are certain that it is NOT rod knock. The rods were inspected well while the motor was apart, and I have pulled the wires off each plug individually to see if the noise stops, which it doesn't.

I've learned mostly everything about this motor the hard way, and am hoping another set of eyes can point me in the right direction as far as where to look and what else could cause this ticking noise aside from rod knock. Knowing my luck, it's bound to be something that is either a pain in the ass to get to or a wallet drainer.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

sounds like rod knock yet to me. Does it correlate to RPMs? Could you get a vid of you revving it up a bit? Going to need more info to get a better idea to you.

I was told that pullin the wires for each cylinder 1 by 1 would tell me which rod it could be as it would stop with the corresponding cylinder not firing. This noise is constant no matter what. The noise doesn't seem to correspond to the rpms, as it stays constant at idling and through all gears. I know what it sounds like, but is there anything else that could cause that noise?

get a metal bar, or long screw drive and starts putting it place to see where u hear the ticking noise.
like i know my engine has a lot of valve lash noise. and injector noise,

is the noise there all the time.. like when u rev it it get louder or go away, if not, do oil change and see if u see any metal shaving in the oil

good luck

cheers

I can have a video with more revving involved tomorrow if that will help man. Car did not make this noise before re assembling the motor, and the rods were in great shape when it was apart. So I'm a little lost at the moment.

Ok...will do an oil change tomorrow as well and let you all know what I find. Thanks for the input.

Sounds like headnoise to me. Mine is the same way, though not as loud. I have been re-assured by forum members in the area that it isn't rod knock, since they've experienced rod knock first hand.

The head is a highport head, or a GTI-R head? I always thought you could only use S3M's in a GTi-R head? And that it had solid lifters? If this is a highport head, you need to bleed those hydraulic lifters out. I probably need to re-do mine as well.

I'm sorry, but the irony of this thread makes me laugh. I sent you a message on the other forum before you put the car back together, explaining why you should NOT run BC Stage 2 hydraulic cams in your mechanical valve train. I have seen this mess up a few GTiR heads back in Jamaica.

If you don't remember, maybe reminding you that I am the person that re-built that car after JGY screwed it up will help. That was before Chad or you owned it....

Ive found my highport head to be alot noiser than my old lowport engine, I thought mine had rod knock, bled all the lifters and the noise remained.. been living with it, battered it at the track and its still as good as ever, putting it down to highports just being noisier ......
