My bet then is that the noise is DEFINITELY valvetrain noise. A combination of solid lifter with a larger cam will do that, easy. Mine are loud with BC STG 3 cams but with hydraulic lifters.

You may want to invest in rocker arm stoppers...

Totally and completely agree, def. valvetrain noise. Could tell that right off the bat. Did you use the same shims as well??

Solid lifter valvetrains are going to be noisy no matter what you do. What I would do, though, is pull the cam lobe oilers out and make sure they're clean and free of debris. They will help quiet it down a tad bit.

I put the motor back together this time. Like many others I have not heard anything about not using BC2's with solids.

I used all the same shims it had.

It did not have an upper chain guard but that is not the noise your hearing.

He told me after he heard it that the noise was present before it blew????

When you put your ear to the valve cover you cant hear anything out of the norm. Alittle injector clicking a little valvetrain noise. It sounds like its coming from behind the motor on the passenger side.

When i had the motor apart i only replaced the number 4 piston and rings thats it. I did not take all the pistons and rods out. based on the condition of the bearings on the number 4 rod i didnt see a need to check the other ones.(looked brand new)

This car might be better off acting as a parts car. Ive found alot of cut corners on this thing. I cant imagine what it looked like as soon as JGY let it go.

So you guys think swapping lifters or cams?

Disclaimer: I put this motor together the way he wanted it done. I personally would of either done a complete build or get a new motor. And i told him this before i started the work. (Another Nissan bredren on a budget, i guess).

If you rebuilt this from JGY, I'd hate to see what it was like from them. I've got some interesting pictures for you regarding what I've found since I bought this thing.

So what is the issue with the cams exactly? You're saying my lifters may be damaged? What do they mess up in the head from your experience? You are the 1st and only person I've heard this from so I'd like to know what you've experienced.

Thanks for all the input guys...if the cams are the issue. I'll take those out here shortly.

The car was always clean, but the mechanical work done by JGY was horrible. I am sure you are still finding stuff wrong, since we only did what was asked in terms of changing things to make it run properly.

As far the cams, the two cases where I saw this create a problem were both back home. The first one was a straight drop in on a perfectly healthy motor which after a couple of redline pulls broke some valve train parts. Since the person that installed them is SR20 vet by any definition and I have seen his work, I know it wasn’t user error. The second set they tried to degree first, and the resultant measurements were way off. he decided to try them anyway and eventually snapped the rockers after hearing a noise similar to what you are hearing.

If the noise was there before then that changes everything.

try putting some hydraulic lifters in, I'm sure that would quiet it down considerably. I have bc2's in my car and it doesn't tick at all.

The more I've driven it and gotten a chance to really hear the noise, the more I realize that it was something different present before we did the re-build. I think it was transmission related, but it is hard to tell after putting the B14 tranny in because of how loud the head noise is. But yea obviously, that isn't it.

Dustin, if my green B14 was an se-r, I would agree about using the red one as a parts car and fully building a motor for the green one, but at this point during school, I don't have the time/funds to make that investment.

I will look into replacing the lifters and hopefully that will at least quiet it down some. That will also enable me to run these cams without any issues from what you all are saying.

The car is parked until the weather gets better regardless, so maybe that's next on the list. Thanks again.
