axle and fluid change... help
So i completely did all the suspension and brakes on my 200 and i the passenger axle was bad so i removed it and as i removed it the oil all came out or atleast most of it... now i was gonna get 80w-90 as apposed to the manufacturers spec, being 75w-90... shouldn't matter. its old anyways.

anyway so how do you fill it back up and whats the easiest way to go about doing it???? please!

i already have everything removed and the new axle is ready to be put in, i even have the new axle shaft seal, along with 4 quarts of castrol 80w-90 gear/tranny oil. i just need pointers.

already searched for things like this and the how to thread for the axle is kinda vague and all the pics are no longer there.

thanks in advanced,
Phil

Speedometer sensor, on top of the tranny. Get a funnel.

I know I sound like a broken record, but make sure that 80w-80 fluid is not GL-5.

I like to fill from the fill/check plug, but lots of people prefer the speedometer sensor like wildmane said.

Why not gl-5? Almost all gear oil says it exceeds gl-5! So what do I get?

Its not about exceeding anything. Its about which one works with our tranny. You put the wrong GL in and youll be buying a new tranny.

We have a drain plug and a fill plug. I use both. Either way is easy though. Check the clutch swap "how to" and youll see how to change the fluid.

GL-4 or less because the formulations used in anything higher than that will slowly wear your yellow metal components in your gearbox away. Synchronizers are typically made of brass and those will be attacked over time by GL-5.

A nice small funel with a hose attached to it works great.

To answer all your questions itsa2drsentra:

GL-4 fluid only or fluid specifically designed to work with yellow metals (brass/copper) like Penzoil Syncromesh. Redline MT-90 is the favorite around here, or Redline's 75w-90 stuff works well too I believe.
GL-5 fluid eats away at the brass syncros in our transmission and will cause almost instant gear grinding for some. The high sulfur content in the GL-5 fluid is what eats the brass.

The fill/check plug is easier to get to, but harder to unscrew (it has a square hole and the right size tool isn't made anymore). It is on the "front" of the transmission and faces the radiator about halfway up the gear case.
The speedometer sensor is at the back and can be gotten to from up top by the firewall.
Either of these is going to require a funnel with attached hose (or transmission funnel).

3.7 liters is the correct total amount to have in the transmission, although you haven't lost all of it so you're sort of on your own. The fill/check plug will let you know when it's full (because fluid will not go in it anymore and instead spill out). If you fill from the speedometer sensor it might be best to completely drain and then re-fill to make sure you have the right amount.

Edit: Sorry, I know some of this was already explained by others above.
