Failure of design is the cause of black death in a lot of cases. May not necessarily be the case in the SR20, but in Automatic G20's it sure is. Overrevving? I think UNDERREVVING is a cause for concern as well. Thats called Lugging the motor.

Is this a problem just in Auto G20's or any Auto SR?

Reason I'm asking is my gf is interested in an Auto G20...

Well, i'm not sure if i can agree with underrevving, i have an A/T P11 G20 ( wifeys car ) , i bought with 112,xxx miles back in sept. 06, changed the valve cover gasket because of leaking and i expected SOME sludge under the valve cover ( i changed the gasket back in May 07 ) and i was fuggin surprised. No sludge.... I thought to myself damn this chick ( i bought it off a chick driver ) must have been racing this sh!t on I-95 every now and then.

It was as clean as a head you can get. I now and then rev the engine up to redline about 2 times a week ( sat. and sun. ) while it's in the driveway in park.

BUT i also change the oil n filter every 2,500 miles.
I have personal experience ( way back when i 1st got my B13 in 1999 ) that lack of oil changes will destroy and engine.

I dunno but my P11 A/T has no sort of sludge in it .

Open the oil filler cap and see if there's any sign of sludge.

Check this web page out

Another interesting read, this one kinda explains why the over emissioned 99 motor is more prone to sludge: http://www.schleeter.com/oil-sludge.htm

Can't speak for the P11, but I have seen a lot of P10's with scored cams I amssume because the oil feed tube is blocked up. We have taken off the heads of P10 and boy they were ugly compared a SE-R of the same year.

The problem is the auto cars not EVER seeing redline. The extra heat from cooling the auto tranny and never seeing 5500 rpms is why the get sludged up. I have put rockers and shims in SEVERAL overrevved SRs. They have no sludge. Overrevving has absolutely nothing to do with sludge.

That may be true. BUT i said overrevving AND lack of maintenance.

So if you constantly hit redline with old oil, guess what happens?
