found why my old engine rattled before the rod knock
turns out the top timing chain gude snapped an was resting between the cam gears..

tore the engine all the way down to the short block, #2 rod bearing was the knocker.. cross hatches are plainly visable even on a 225k mile motor, there was no sludge either just varnish so im glad to see that..

im going to throw new rod/main bearings in, a new gasket set an a set of really clean jdm cams an stick it in my girlfriends g20 since her engines about ready to crap out..

oh i have a question tho, altho the cams didnt have much wear on them, the tops of the lobs were scarred up on the intake cam, the exhaust cam was fine.. all shims an stuff were in place an theres nothin floating around the valve cover.. thats why im going to stick the jdm cams in..

How does the chain look? For that guide to break it must have been getting hit otherwise i do not really see a reason for it to break. Also its just another reason to upgrade to the new tensioner and remove the guide.

thats why everyone removes them.

Are you sure about that? There is one installed on my lowport when I purchased the vehicle. Maybe the ones after 1997?
