Removing axle from tranny, leakage?
Right, my axle needs replacement (well, one of the joints anyways), and I was wondering: Can I just pull out the entire axle, or will the transmissionfluid come out?

Or is it better just to replace the joint (it's the diff-side )?

I wouldn't know absolutely for sure because I've always drained the fluid before taking the axle out. I'm almost positive you'll dump a liter or two on the ground if you don't.

Take a look at the fill/check plug with the car on a level surface. Is it above the axle hole? I think it is.
If it is, then fluid will come out when you take the axle out.

it will come out unless you have the car tilted to the side where the axle will be in. It will still leak some but not as bad

yeah, I've always drained mine, but I've heard you can just jack the one side of the car you're working on way up high, and that will keep most of the fluid in it.

I tried to leave the fluid in once on an auto and once on a manual. The manual tranny leaked like a bitch and the auto nothing came out.

Okay, I guess I'm gonna have to tilt it like a mofo then. Will I have to refill when some comes out? How much can come out before having to refill?

You need to keep 4 quarts in it. And since you cant tell whether or not you'll have 4 quarts after you're done, it's probably better to just drain it all out, and re-use it depending on how old it is...

Why the need to not drain it and replace it, anyway???

Just drain it, only reason I didn't the first time was because I was in a rush and forgot. That was the automatic. So when I went to do the manual I thought it would be the same and not pour out. So I didn't drain it and got MTF all over the driveway.

I drain everytime now. No matter what.

Technically it's 3.5 - 3.7 liters (3.18 - 3.36 quarts).

M0J0, what ever comes out, you need to put that much back in whether that is re-using fluid or with new.
