Thread: Broken trunk Spring

One of the two rod springs that support that help raise the trunk lid on my B-13 snapped near the end (passengers side). Got a new one coming, but how do you install ? Seems like there must be some trick to getting it in. Any help appreciated

I have no idea why this hasn't been covered on this forum before. This is a very common problem. The passenger's side trunk torsion bar on my brother's car locked up before he bought it and the owner destroyed the torsion bar mounts by forcing the trunk closed. They then removed both torsion bars and called it a day (trunk is very "heavy" now).

My trunk started locking up maybe 8 months ago and I've yet to deal with it. However I did find out the cause of the problem and the fix should be easy enough.

It sounds like you had a similar problem and the torsion bar just snapped instead of ruining the mounts?

As far as re-installing them, you're on your own. I have no idea how it's done. However, might I suggest you avoid the poor design all together by installing a gas strut instead. Let me see if I can find that thread on the old forum.

same thing happened an my daily i picked up the whole assembly from a boneyard for 20 bucks works mint now

My b13 doesnt have these torsion bars, I guess the previous owner took em out or changed the trunk lid. I went to the junkyard to buy the torsion bars and cost like 18 bucks. I tried to install em with help of a friend. We installed them with the trunklid open and we were ready to close it but it wouldnt go down. We gave up and took of the new torsion bars and put back the original hinges

After reading the link bennfenner posted up, i'ma gonnna give it a try aggain.

Its pure muscle. you just have to bend them in without wacking yourself in the head.

I did mine some months ago. Is a very easy installation once get the trick of how to do it. It took me about 30 min to figure it out . The only tool you need is a big plyer:

The bars are crossed at the middle of the trunk:



With the trunk open you will hook the open end first:



Once in place, then the other end with the plyers you will bend it to get it in place





Now, this is very important, the hooks are attached to the trunk hinges, the trunk hinges have a small piece of rubber behind them which are use to avoid the hooks to retract fully towards the trunk hinges when you open the trunk and at the same time the piece of rubber helps to avoid metal to metal contact of the trunk hinges and the body of the car. If the hooks retract completely you are not going to be able to close your trunk.

On the picture you can see a small piece of black rubber(arrow)(I used some of the rubbers that goes with the fuel injectors, hahaha, sometimes you have to improvise) these pieces of rubber help to avoid the trunk lid to open too much in order to avoid these hooks to retract fully.

Thank you very much for the help, pictures and description. I knew it opened too far, and figured something like this would fix mine but I didn't know how it looked from the factory. I must be missing that rubber part on one side and not the other. Or it has stopped doing it's job well enough.

You guys think the b13 trunk is heavy without the springs, try lifting an NX trunk without the struts.
