I usually use one of the bolts near the pully side of the head where the throttle cable holder is and like others have said you can use the runner or if you take the egr off those bolt holes work too and are relatively level that way. Now if you have a trans hooked up too, then thats another story.
I too would go out the bottom. You don't have to disconnect the front and rear motormounts that way. Just undo the crossmember from the chassis and drop the engine and trans intact. Also, if you push the ECU plug out into the engine bay from inside you don't have to go through the pain of disconnecting the harness from the motor.

I don't think I've ever broken a sensor pulling the engine out the top, and most of the time, I do it with the tranny still bolted up. You just need an extra person to give you a hand. One person guide the engine in, and the other SLOWLY lower the engine down/ pull it up.

ya same here man, i've done it a few times now an always went through the top, tranny still attached.. just need a helper, which i have pleanty of..
^If you're gonna do it solo, then you should drop the tranny first and then the pull the engine afterward. If you do it that way, then you should have no problems doing it alone. I've done it that way a couple times. I usually do all of my stuff by myself.
