how to reset the 'service engine soon' light
ive had the car about 4 months now and it came on last thursday. i stumbled upon a thread about a bad/loose gas cap so i went and re-tightened it up but didnt check to see if the light was still on (i assume it would be because i have not driven it yet.)

but i also needed an oil change and i did that on saturday but the light was still on, so i would like to reset the light and see if it pops back on. yes i know i can go to autozone or check it myself with a screwdriver but i also would like to see if either of these were the issue.

oh and its a 99 se-l

If you read the fsm it says to reset the ecu to turn the screw on the ecu clockwise, then counterclockwise quickly to reset the ecu. EAsy

I know you said it but, just go to Autozone/Checker/O'Reilly's and use their scantool, then you can quickly and easily clear any codes and actually KNOW what was causing the light instead of just guessing.

Pull the negative terminal off the battery for at least 30 minutes. Leaving it unplugged overnight definitely does the trick

It's just going to come back on. Get it scanned checked then fixed

He didn't seem to care enough to know what it exactly is, so giving him a blind fix

Gas cap can set off a code too.

my maxima had the light come and go because of gas. so i had 2 issues i dealt with, as well as getting a fresh tank of gas but the light is still on (oops 3 issues, my bad). on a side note im getting it looked at tomorrow.

thanks for all the 'noob' comments too. they usually make me smile.
