Anyone ever had this problem before?
Heading home one day from work, car would bog down and have no acceleration power what so ever and pep right back up and be ok...happened 3 times during a 20 min drive home. I park it when I get home.

Next morning I start it up runs great, pull it into the garage, not a minute later it just shuts off and dies on me. Try to crank it and wouldn't turn over at all. Thinking the fuel filter was bad so replaced that, dirty black fuel came out when I put the air hose through it.

BUT it still wouldn't turn over. Dad thinks to pull the distributor cap off and low and behold the rotor hold down screw just falls out when pulling off the cap.

What do the fuel pump and cap/rotor have to do with the engine turning over?

Nope. I've never seen that happen before.

x2. You have a bigger problem right now than your cap/rotor. At this point, I'd just replace the cap/rotor, and continue your troubleshoot.

For completeness, what else did you do? A cap/rotor wont stop the engine from cranking over...

Yes, I believe fun was being poked at him saying "turn over".

Yeah, that's a big difference than "it won't start" or "has no ignition"

If thats all he meant, then yeah he looked at the right things. Otherwise, something got lucky or unjammed (like the starter) and his problem disappeared on it's own
