Initial Startup (rebuild)
Alrigh some of you might know, I am in process of doing a full OE rebuild. It should be finished within the next week or so. my questions are to those that have done this..
What should i do for intial start up.. I know some prime motor a few times (not completely sure how other than unplug dist and crank a few times for oil pressures) others run the motor for 5 minutes at 2000rpm. Alsodifferent types of oils etc.
I just dont wanna fuc this up. Lmk all input is good
Thanks

I think you're all set.
Pull the fuel pump fuse and crank the engine over for maybe 10-20 seconds to prime it.

Did you hone the cylinders and put new piston rings in? If so, treat it like a new car and make sure the engine sees a lot of load (WOT as well as engine braking) for the first 500-1,000 miles. Do this while staying below 4-5k rpm.

If you feel like it, use some cheap oil to begin with and change it out after 200 miles for some good stuff.

Definitely do this. That will make sure any little particles that shave off from the initial break-in don't hang around in the engine and get somewhere they shouldn't be, like bearings and clogging passages.

Many techs I know run crappy oil for 5min, change it out, run crappy for about 2 fillups or 1,000mi, then change it out for synthetic. When running a freshly built motor, you can never change the oil too much.

synthetic or not? i cant believe i just wasted brand new oil. when i got the car i threw in new oil and fluids, drove it less than two miles (no plates) and then took it out. Drained it without thinking into an old bunch of oil. So time to spend another 30 bucks on oil

Dude use wal-mart brand synthetic oil, that's like $18 for 5 quart jugs.

You can SERIOUSLY buy the cheapest oil available and run it temporarily, until you're sure that all of the contaminants and metal shavings have been caught by the oil filter.

If you can find oil for less than $2/qt. that's fine. You're not running it for any extended period of time.
