Need info on sr20 conversion into a VW
Good day all, I have a 1998 VW passat 1.8T right hand drive however I experienced lots of problems with vehicle in the past including high maintenence costs. I am interested in converting to an sr20 into my car but know very little about these types of engines. Can someone please let me know if there is a type that will work on my car as well as a tiptronic system if available.I would also like to know where I can locate one as well as prices.Thanks.

It can be hard enough to swap an SR20 into a stock non-SR20ed car (1.6l Sentras, 200sx's and NX's.)

I can't imagine the amount of fab work it would take to do that into a completly new car. Doesn't mean it's not possible, but not sure if it's worth the hassle.

Is 1.8T not powerful enough? Can't you just up the boost or bigger turbo?

Yes you can, the 1.8t is a stout engine from the factory. The problem is that they come with tiny turbo's from the factory(smaller than a t25). You were serious about putting a sr20 into a passat? The 1.8t you have in there has more power than a stock sr20 in n/a form. A chip, exhaust and intake and the car has enough power to get up and go to about 5k rpm's with a decent amount of torque. Other than that, sell the car and buy something else non-german if you don't like the maintenance costs

I tried to let that one slide, if he was already with Nissan then it would be another story

The funny part about it is that they suck in the passat too, why would you want to keep that slow shifting sludge box?

I wouldn't expect him to know the proper terminology for it (automatic transmission with manual override) and describing it as Tiptronic is fine. It's the fact that he wants one that's laughable.

This way you can put on your makeup while driving when your just driving around town, and if you want to be as awesome as a manual you can just manually start shifting.
