Thread: engine removal

for an avg guy, out the bottom is by FAR easiest. take off xmember motor mounts, then the xmember, then the axles, lower the car down, chain the engine with the hoist, the other 2 mounts, lower the engine onto the ground, chain the front stabalizer bar (without the rad in place!), raise the car, slide the engine out (on a trolly)

I take the motor out from the top. Wasn't very difficult at all, actually. Once I got started, it took me a whopping 40 minutes to pull the motor, after removing the tranny.

Of course, I find it easier to put the tranny on the car after the motor is in already, too

Unless you remove the tranny first(pointless when you're removing the engine too-No offence Tekkie) drop the engine through the bottom.

One more recommendation:
Only remove portions of the harness connected to the chassis. Removing the harness from hard to reach sensors sucks when the engine is still in the car. There are a few connectors on the left side of the bay by the alternator, the PS connector on the rack, the power harness from the + battery terminal, the ECU plug and, the dash connector. Lower the engine slowly, stopping every few inches to make sure you got everything. Once the engine is low enough pull the ECU and dash plug through the firewall. Once it is out simply transfer the harness to the other engine. It really is much easier this way. I don't know why this hasn't caught on...

dont forget some of the engine grounds!!! located on the im to the rear of the car from the tb.

it doenst matter how it comes out everyone does it different with the same exact results.

None taken. Every time I've pulled a motor, the tranny has always been out of the car for one reason or another. I would agree that if you were to drop the entire drivetrain from underneath, it would be MUCH easier.

takes me about 30 minutes to pull from up top and about 45 dropping it. this is in the drive way, if I had a lift I would drop it from the bottom.

am I sensing some dejavu here? this seems to be the exact conversation I listed in my 2nd post after searching for it. lol

I can get a motor out in 30 mins flat provided there's no issues with seized bolts and i'm in a garage - so either way seems to be easy enough - just get down and get dirty, you'll get it man
