Thread: exhaust leak - weak motor mounts?

so I have always had this issue when my car wasn't warm, and in 1st or 2nd gear, if you have the revs somewhat high, and let off the gas abruptly, an exhuast leak lets itself be known.... but as soon as the car warms up, it doesn't happen... so it's a minor leak... right?

Over time it also started happening when the car was in reverse. and it's getting louder of course. It's like any time I put the engine in an inertia state of slowing down, or in reverse a loose portion of my exhaust near the engine rears it's ugly head and lately it's getting worse and worse.. It seems like my motor mounts might be allowing my engine to move more than it should and it's causing stress on my exhaust..

It could be, but I would also check your exhaust gaskets/bolts. Maybe some are just weak or loose and the engine movement is enough to open a gap?

I finally got in my new motor mounts and the exhaust leak is GONZO!!

Whatever the motor was doing when I would decelerate in gear or go in reverse (the motor would move either back or foward in the engine bay) was causing the flex tube to leak, only when those forces were put on it...

over time it got worse and worse and would leak even when the car was idling until it got warm.. and then only upon deceleration in gear and reverse....

well I replaced the motor mounts and it's GONE.. crazy.. I thought the damage was done and it'd still leak..

this gives me more time to wait on replacing my exhuast...

im sure the damage is already done. Its not like the exhaust metal fixes itself once it starts to crack and brake....your probably driving on borrowed time till the weather gets to working on that exhaust

yeah i know, that's why I said it gives me more time to worry about replacing it..

I'm starting to wonder if the header I bought might have a leak (or something). Some of the metal lines on the bottom of the flex pipe are frayed and broken. What do you guys think?

yeah probably have a leak on that flex pipe...

Yea flex pipe is what killed me with the mounts. Ended up getting a new header and dp. welding SS is damn expensive.

Is there any way to fix the frayed mess? I can put a pic up if needed.
