I would never personally use any other penzoil oils in my car beside the syncromesh gear oil, I am very pleased with syncromesh in my tranny. I may consider tryng the mixing mt90 and the heavy for a good mixture when getting into more hp.

I was told not to mix syncromesh with anything because its like oil and water to everything else, just a helpful hint...

I just filled my trans with a GL4/GL5 store bought valvoline 75w90. I hope it works ok for this new gear stack, but I don't plan on keeping it in there for long. It was really cheap so I threw it in there just to help get rid of any extra stuff the ATF didn't get out. Hopefully the synchros won't be bothered from it in the next week or so. After a few weeks I am going to take it out and maybe try the synchromesh stuff.

I don't think I am going to waste any more money on the heavy shockproof. Its too expensive around here. I will just order it from go fast depot I guess if I do that again.

I think the lighter lubes are going to perform better, maybe not cushion as much, but they shouldn't suspend any contaminants as much as the thick stuff. I did notice that metal pieces seemed to FLOAT in the heavy shockproof, rather than sink to the bottom. This may cause some issues under some circumstances.

I'll be switching over to Royal Purple 75w90 tonight, since nobody told me not to.

Don't know why but I always stay away from the multi grade MTF. I feel better with a cheaper gl4 specific then an expensive gl3/gl4/gl5 multi purpose fluid. I would assume you could run anything if just for a week though.

you should be able to use them. Just use the GL4 based stuff to have the best shifting available.

I just traded the valvoline 75w90 for some pennzoil synchromesh. I love the synchromesh! If you need to find a good GL4 lube, this is a great one! I cannot believe the difference!

The main problem with GL-5 Fluids in our B13/14 transmissions is (as pointed out earlier) not the physical properties, but in fact the chemical attributes. The problem additive is principally Sulfur . Sulfur in particular is known to attack Brass, inducing stress-corrosion cracking. Phosphorus is also present, and although it increases the maximum stress and the time to failure at failure in slow strain-rate tests, It also changes the mode of failure to ductile failure in the presence of moderate concentrations. The results are complemented by some electrochemical measurements. The inhibiting effect is attributed to the formation of zinc phosphate on the surface of the alloy which inhibits dezincification and subsequently the SCC of the brass.

The ungeek version is your syncros become softer, and wear much faster in GL-5.
