I bet if you drop your lower pan you'll have two wierd looking pieces of aluminum block in it. That's what was "supposed" to hold your chain to the crank gear. They don't work. The only oil pump timing cover assembly that will keep your chain from falling away from the crank AT ALL, is a VE/GTI-R assembly.
I broke my tabs off just putting in cams.
The car will run with one tooth off on the crank, EASY. Just don't expect it to go anywhere past 4Krpm at WOT. If you baby it, it will rev higher.
Everyone has been pointing you in the right direction, yet you still doubt and ask for other solutions. Pull the damn pans off already, pull the timing cover off, and re-install the chain THE RIGHT WAY.
