backprobe? ha ha 2 alligater clips, 2 sewing needles, and a dvm with audio continuity setting. done.

^ohms setting works too if thats not an option

also check your mechanical timing

Its not going to be your chain.. if that's the case that it jumped a tooth the car won't turn over.

You don't say. Myself and MANY other's have put everything back together wrong after a cam swap, by accident of course, and had it be off a tooth. The car will start and will actually run somewhat ok. Mine ran great, till you hit wot lol.

Keep in mind that his car has S4's that were NOT installed by him.

Yeah thanks, your post helped me alot.

Nowhere did i say I didn't install the cams myself. For starters, this problem was present before to i put the cams in. When I installed the cams, the chain was zip tied to the cam sprockets, and unless the nubs around the crank sprocket are broken off, the chain hasn't skipped a tooth.

Edit: 4th cam install in an sr20.

I apologize. You said that the problem has been there as long as you can remember so I assumed you didn't add stuff to a car that didn't run right in the first place lol. Also fwiw zip tying the gears to the chain won't keep the chain from dropping down at the bottom.

There are nubs on each side of the crank sproket to prevent the chain grim falling off. I called jwt before the install and they confirmed the chain can not fall off the lower sproket.

Edit: So back to backprobing the knock sensor.. Wich wires do I probe, and what kind of resistance should I be looking for?

I still made the jwt cam stopper as listed on their how to pdf.

Was this sarcastic!?! Dude, you want me to spoonfeed you fine.
Take the sewing needles. Plug one into the knock sensor harness. Plug the other into the ecu harness on the corrisponding pin, take the alligator clip with a wire on it, attach it to the knock sensor. then take the other side of the alligator clip (assuming it's long enough, just add a wire if it's not) and attach it to one of the leads on your dvm. Then, attach the other lead from the dvm to the pin sticking out of the ecu harness. Set your dvm to continuity with audio response, (looks like an arrow going into ripples of water after a pebble is dropped in) and measure for continuity. If there is, then you're fine. Switch the dvm to resistance and measure the ohms to make sure it's not really really bad resistance (indicating a break in the wire, or corrosion within the wire). Then do the same for the ground on the other pin of the knock sensor harness (if there's 2, I can't quite remember.)

There. Dont say I never do anything for you.

lol, wrong, wrong wrong, trust me, i have done soooooo many cam installs that its not even funny and yes even though you zip tie the cam sprockets and all that jaz the chain can still skip at the bottom, those two prongs will not hold the chain in place if it slacks just right. Then when you go to turn the crank over is when it will jump. Ive had it happen a couple times. But thats why i always verify my timing is good by turning it over by hand two revolutions to line everything back up and verify. Then i torque everything down and be done with it if all is good.

Trust me the only one that wont allow the chain to skip is the ve front cover as it has a fully chain wrap around at the crank gear. not even slack can allow that thing to skip down there. but all the rest it can and it will if your not carefull.

I would go double check it anyways. but you definetly need to check the knock sensor, its there for a reason dude.
