Could something like this. An aftermarket catch can. This one looks a lot cleaner.

You think like steel wool would work?

Probably not, especially if particles of it will go back down into the oil. Leveled baffles is the only way.

Look at the oil separator diagram below

Good point Vadim, didn't consider particles falling in.

Just found said hose with pipe cleaner thing, gonna run it there and see how it works.

I don't think so. It would either be too tightly packed to allow air to flow through well, or it would be too loose to do any good. Did I mention steel wool is flamable?!

Edit: I've reversed my stance on steel wool. I think it's a decent material for this. Shouldn't rust if it's kept oily and shouldn't combust with no source of ignition and little oxygen around it. Apparently it is used in some applications and works well enough.

This won't work either. You still need somewhere for the oil to drain back into the crankcase. The picture you posted only shows two top ports, so the canister will fill up rather quickly, with a bunch of garbage. Ask me how I know :o

Best method is to keep it stock, or stock-like.

Right, and that makes perfect sense, but I guess what I was getting at really is if there might be something out there that isn't as big as what we currently have that still does the same job? Location isn't really the issue (for me, anyway), the size is.

Tekkie, the catch can pictured would work as long as it has a drain at the bottom of it that can be drained (usually manually). How quickly it fills up (requiring manual draining) would depend on the amount of WOT the engine sees and the condition of the piston rings.

While true that it would work, it's nowhere near like the stock catch can/oil separator. The whole point of removing the stock one to put in a better one, is that it does the same thing without any user interaction

Trust me when I say that having a catchcan with only two ports on the top is absolutely a headache, and is worthless. They leak something awful (especially from that little hose that's supposed to be a fill level gauge), and you end up just draining them, but not topping off the motor as you should. I'd rather run a hose straight from the block to the head, than to run another catchcan like that again.

Here, problem solved. I attached the predescribed PCV hose with the interior wire in place of the separator. I aimed it up and let it run for a while, revved it up a lot, and nothing was coming out (at least in condensed form). The output did not seem any different than with the separator there instead, but only some actual tests could really prove that.

Anyways, it seems to work fine this way. I routed it to the same inlet after that. Hopefully the wire and length of hose should keep the downward drainage acting like it's supposed to. My VC outlet is right now just a hose going down aiming at the ground =D but some type of can might be in order eventually, just a little one though. That way, I could keep it down low and not noticeable also.

BTW, looks a hell of a lot nicer without that separator... =)
