You might have a point Ken. I can't recall if just the puck shaped ones come in different sizes or if they both do. Something tells me they both do. If they could make the ones with the channel in it the correct size every time, why couldn't they make the other ones the correct size? I think you need both of them to be variable height to align the rocker arm correctly with respect to the cam lobe.
Yah FSM says the one with the groove is called a rocker arm guide. The one without is the shim. The shim is the only one you need to worry about as far as dimensions go, although it says you should always use a new rocker arm guide. Odd. I would have though they'd be more careful about that. I guess it doesn't matter.
If one of the previous owners broke rockers and fixed it without looking for missing shims/guides, I'd be worried there are more stuck somewhere else.
They can block oil passages, possibly cause oil starvation.

alright finally got the vc gasket. i found out there were new valves put in. correct me if im wrong, this is what im looking for? if so i'm in good shape
Should i clean this?
And this is whats happening to the vc. soon to be white
Yep those are the things you're looking for. Also, yah, clean that VC if you want. Brake cleaner works well, as does gasoline. Watch out for the black silicone looking sealant stuff, it can slowly be eaten away by both cleaning methods. Just don't go crazy.
