Gutting the Power Steering Pump
Hey everyone. I'm about to gut a power steering pump. I have a good idea of what needs to be removed from an old thread on the original forum. However I have a question that remains. I searched but I couldn't find the answer. What do I with the hose outlets? On the bottom the high pressure hose is screwed in with a banjo bolt. My assumption is that this bolt will not screw in all the way without the hose in the way. So what are you guys doing about the bottom outlet?

Second should I leave the top outlet on the ps pump open?

When I gutted mine I used JB weld to fill in the holes of the banjo bolt on the bottom. On the top I found some black replacement rubber feet for those steel folding chairs fits nice and snug on top, it looks almost stock-ish and it works. I then filled the pump with motor oil (or maybe PS fluid or gear oil... can't remember) under the assumption that the pump still needed lubrication.

After thinking about it some more I realized that the pump is probably internally lubricated and the fluid inside the pump plays no role in its lubrication. When I get a chance I'll drain the fluid from mine and just leave the cap/plug on to prevent dust from getting inside.

Honestly though if the previous owner hadn't mangled the PS lines I would have reinstalled the PS equipment. I really hate not being able to whip it around in a parking lot, its fine everywhere else, but I just dread parking lots.

I just removed all the fittings ..I dont even have the rear plate on mine ... Just the body, shaft / bearings , and pulley ... The 2 bearings are sealed bearing ..have its own lubrication and are sealed ...

I agree. Plus if one wants to change the belts in a hurry it sure is alot easier still having the PS pump as a tensioner.

I tried to get a belt on without the pump as a tensioner .... But I could not find a size I felt Comfortable about .. ... I used the Aluminum B14 pump, so its not adding to much extra weight and I can get an OE size belt anywhere ... Just how I did it .... either way will work ...

There will still be a minuscule amount of drag from a gutted pump, but not a lot. The drag in a normal PS pump comes from the rotation of the pump pushing the PS fluid. A gutted pump just has bearings left. It's not doing any work, so you eliminate most of the drag.

Yeah I know about the 11.99 power steering removal. I just would like to keep the tensioner. Maybe later down the line I'll eliminate the gutted pump to save some pounds. If this car becomes a track only car that is.
