Brent, Not correct on this one. You are probably thinking of the IACV/AAC which is controlled by the ECU based on throttle position & other things. Check the FSM. The unit testing procedures completely explains its operation. Neither are on/off valves.
This is the Air Regulator.. It is only open during startup of a cold engine.
This is the one that sits under in Intake Mani.
It has the bi-metal strip that opens with a cold engine and
upon startup is activated for a few minutes and closes.
It stays closed until the engine gets
completely cold again..
On very hot days, Ive seen it not open at all AND on very
cold days Ive experienced it opening after only a few hours.
The bimetal movement is controled by the surface temperature &
not throttle position.
Sometimes the Air Regulator bimetal sticks Open which causes a constant high idle
OR sticks Closed that causes a rough cold engine idle. Partial sticking also causes strange idling.
At this price, this is a real bargan!! A new Air Regulator should last for another 15 years..
