You can remove the top two or three threads, the axle thread portion is way long.
Then use a thread restore file to smooth the good threads into the area you removed. Should work fine.
you know what the bolts look like with a shoulder at the top, where the top few threads are gone ?
then run the nut on carefully.
Of course the correct way is to get a die to re-cut, but you still have to be careful and remove the excess metal and line up the threads or you can damage the good threads.
