Mucked up Axle threads
Just received an axle from a wrecker - the jerk mucked up the threads with a hammer something fierce. I called him and he said he'd give me a freaking credit - I dont need a credit, I need an axle! I can't find anything for even close to what he sold it for.

It's just the top 2-3 threads that are mucked up. He said if I can fix it, he'll help me with the cost of the axle (give me a partial refund).

Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this? Grind it, cut it, somehow rethread it, anything?

use a big enough die to rethread it.

what is the size of it, anyone know? M24 or something? I'd prefer a cheap way to fix it if possible, can a guy hacksaw or bench grind off the top threads so the nut would bypass it or something?

you do it cheap it will end up costing you in the long run so go to the store and buy a tap and die set because you will need it over and over again

I have a tap and die set, but nothing with a die that large!

Check at Napa (if you guys have Napa). They have a broad selection of taps and dies, generally in stock, but they may have to special order something that big.

yeah its a pretty big one maybe online would be your best best. You could try and use a file and make threads but either way its going to be a pain

That actually happened to me once - the lead threads got so bad from rust damage that after I took the bolt off, it wouldn't go back on. What I did was took a grinder and flattened the damaged threads so the bolt would slide right over them, and I still had plenty of thread left to screw it on. I would definitely recommend the die, though.

I had the lead few threads go to hell on one of my axles. I went to autozone or advance, cant remember which and they rented me the correct tap and die set it has been working for a couple of years now, with no problems.
