I think it would. Unless there's an issue with the actual harness of the CPS.
I would honestly consider checking ecery single aspect of the CRANKpos sensor. If the crank is not reading correct voltage, it might not start at all, but it might still cause those slight hiccup/backfires.

If it were the CAMpos sensors, the car would start but quickly die out or run like crap.
The crank pos sensor is what sends the initial signal to the ECU to send spark to each coilpack. The cam sensors just send signal as to when to send out the spark... I could be wrong though... LOL

Honestly, check the timing first, then the Crank, the cam, and finally wiring. Thats the route I would take.... you'd take way more time fiddling around the harness than to ohm out and check voltage on each sensor.

He's getting an rpm signal. Maybe AEM is getting it from the CAS, but I'd bet not, and it's coming from the CPS. In which case, it's probably fine...

Have had hardly any time to tinker with the car, sorry

I don't recall seeing a CrankPS anywhere on the engine or tranny, but it doesn't really matter because I know it's not hooked up to the AEM. The AEM is using the 2 CamPS to acquire angle and RPM, I'm positive.

I'm going to try disconnecting one sensor at a time and see if the situation changes during startup, that's a good idea. Maybe I can narrow down the culprit. I'm also positive it's not an output problem, but an input problem.

I'm on the wall about it being something physically wrong with the engine, but I'm sure it can't be or else, I'd a) have a running engine (badly running) or b) have no compression, or valves for that matter.

I'm still thinking that a rewire is in order, but it's SO fuggin hot outside and I've been working on the house.

YEEEEHAW.

Back up and running. Major thanks to phatsomax on this. I wired the car myself, and for the life of me, I have no recollection of the AEM using the factory Crank pos. sensor, only the 2 cam sensors (1 modified).

Here's what I did, I unplugged both cam sensors and checked the computer during crank up. As I thought, there was absolutely no spark or fuel this time, so there was no backfiring or hesitation. Also, syncOK, was OFF. But what's this? I was still reading an RPM of ~150RPM on the screen....

So I look around the engine bay, and sure enough, there is a crank sensor hidden behind the motor mount. The sensor was sticking out about 1/2" from where it should be and the screw was almost all the way out. It was a PITA to tighten the screw because the mount was right there on top of it. My guess is it was getting a very weak signal off the flywheel, so it was most likely reading 150RPM when it was really turning 300RPM. That also explains why it stalled during braking, the brembos+tires were so much that it dislodged the sensor from the trans. LOL.

BTW, the engine is running better than I remember it. I'm guessing the sensor was missing a signal every so often causing random backfiring.
