you still can, its just alot harder. (especially taking the alty out thru the top)

you have to loosen the top bolt on the bracket (engine block)
then remove the 2 lower nuts (engine block bracket)

this way you can angle that (engine block) bracket so you can slide the long bolt out.

Then just fight the alty to get it out thru the top....

Just watch out when you pull the alty off its engine block bracket, sometimes they are a tight squeeze and when you pull it, the force you pull with makes you hit the radiator when it gives. you'll see what i mean.

Okay so I finally had time to work on my car yesterday and I removed AC/Alternator successfully but there was a few things I wanted to know.

1.Will any other SR alternator fit the GTIR motor?
2.Can I remove the Iron bracket from the alternator that bolts on to the Egine block if the new alternator doesn't come with one?

Here is what you do.

1. Take out radiator with fans

2. Take of bolts that hold iron bracket to block.

3. Take out complete alt and iron bracket.

4. Grind down one side of the pivot bolt head. This will allow bolt to slide out the next time.

The alternator is already out, but I'll take note of grinding down the bolt for next time.

So you grind the actual bolt and nothing else? I ended up removing the radiator and fans then removed the manifold and slid the bolt out. Sucked but had to be done. I'm using all oem parts so I wonder if the GTR bolt is actually different?

I agree, I need my AC. Don't use it all that much when it's hot but when it's muggy and rainy I need that fresh AC air circulating. Plus foggy windows suck.

I didn't have to take out my radiator fans, I just pulled it out from the bottom and unbolted Iron bracket and AC compressor.
