Thread: dowell pins

so i guess i only got 1 on my ve?? and when i took the tranny off the dowell pin stuck in the tranny.. now i know how to get it back into the engine..

i've read a few threads where people have said you need them because they not only keep the plate thing in place but they help center the tranny so that the input shaft dont destroy the clutch.. im wonderin if thats true or what? i i've worked on other motors that didnt have any an never had problems, but since they wernt fwd sr20's ya never know..

i think i can get a dowell pin from one of my other motors if need be.. but where does it go.. the one i got now was on the header side..

on top of all this im thinkin the reason i couldnt get that last bolt in where the rear bracket goes was because of mis alignment, prolly cause i was missin a dowell pin i'd imagine..

what are your guys thoughts?

when i just had the new clutch put in a couple weeks ago he said i only had one. he had one on hand and put a second one in. the positions were roughly (don't quote me) 8-9ish and 12ish facing the engine on the driver side.

i think your right.. i just wanna be sure.. hopefully it will line up better this time so i can get all the bolts in

i think there like 9ish and 2ish facing clutch. I don't think i have any on mine either. 1 was stuck in the old motor and I thought i put the other one in, but i guess not lol

i wouldnt see a problem runnin with out them as long as all the bolts are in
altho i did read that it has some close tolerances..

I think you are askng for trouble by not using the dowel pins. There is always a location tolerance and a diameter tolerance on bolt holes. They are not a good replacement for accurately placed dowels. Dowels are not needed if the transmission input shaft reaches in to the pilot bushing in the flywheel, but ours does not.

I have seen a few of these with teeth striped off the disk ... always are missing a dowel !!

that's what happened to my disk. the splines were all stripped flat. the guy putting the new one in pointed out that it was missing a dowel pin and that may have been why.

well went to the garage an sure enough, in the auto tranny that came with my ve was a dowell pin, so grabbed it an put it in, slapped the tranny back in.. all bolt holes line up correctly this time!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!! also i put that plate bewtween the engine an trans back in too..
