Name that noise!
I am beating myself up over this, trying to figure it out.

First off, its not the motor.

Its a clack clack, type sound that varies by speed (not engine rpm). You can really hear it if you put the car in neutral, from about 40mph to 0. It makes the noise while in gear as well, but you really hear it more when in neutral, probably because there is less engine noise when the car idles.

At first I thought it was the transmission for sure, took it apart, and when I pulled the diff out, it made a slight noise as you spun the gears, so I changed it out, still didn't fix it.

Then I thought it might be the passenger side axle bearing (the one that bolts to the carrier bracket), its got a little play in it, but I don't think enough to warrant the noise I'm getting.

So now I'm trying to figure out if its the wheel bearings, which I really don't think it is, since they don't usually make a clack noise when going bad.

And just a few minutes ago, talking to a buddy, he said check the input shaft bearing...which I never thought to check when the transmission was apart. :o

Any thoughts? Anyone ever had similar symptoms? Most likely I'll try pulling out the transmission again to check the input shaft bearing.

Oh wow I've been having the similar if not the same noise!

It would become more relevant when your breaking, but is not the breaks because it does it while in costing too.

It started happening after my axle nut got loose on the passenger front wheel, since then I have tightened it but I am still thinking it's my bearings, so I bought new ones, but haven't installed them yet. The axle nut was loose because I replaced the tie rods and was looking into removing the axle but then decided to not do it until later on.

Today I got home, and after I parked in my leveled garage, I jerked the steering wheel a little to left and right and a very similar noise started happening.

Funny thing is my dad has replaced his driver side tie rod on his Chevy, the tie rod was also from autozone just like mine. Well he mentioned that when he would be jerking the steering wheel it would make a clicking sound, I laid under the car and listened, sounds very similar to the noise I'm getting.

I will check tomorrow, it might just be the freaking tie rods, I've replaced my rear hubs/bearing/rotors and breaks so I can't imagine the sound coming from the rear hehe.

Mine doesn't do it when you jerk the steering wheel, only when the car is rolling, and you can feel the noise in the shifter.

Its gotta be something inside the tranny.

I can feel the tick tick tick, in the pedals and the floor but not the shifter. It is also not engine rpm dependent, but speed dependent.

AC compressor might be, because my AC ran dry when I first replaced the AC line, stupid leaks . But AC would be RPM dependent hehe.

Put the car on jack stands and let it idle in gear.

I did so, even drove the car to 30 mph and no same sound.

I started tearing up the car, reamoving the axles and replacing wheel bearings. Afterwards gonna dig into the transmission and maybe there is something off there...

Funny. I just replaced my passenger side axle this weekend and it was fine for a couple days (or maybe I didn't notice) but I'm getting a similar ticking mostly when I'm accelerating from a stop or coming to a complete stop.

I though at first it was maybe rotors or the caliper so I took everything apart and reassembled...didn't see anything weird.

When I installed the axle seal, it didn't sit *perfectly* flush so I'm thinking that might have something to do with it.

I'm gonna check it out this weekend.

Get some recording of the sound in some way and then I may be able to help.

Describing sounds is very subjective.
