Thread: Gas fumes in the ****pit

This is on my '91 Sentra SE-R. For the past 8+ months, I've been getting gas fumes in the c ockpit of my car. I don't get it when I have the windows rolled up, which is why I haven't done anything about it (good 'ole long Michigan winters). So, with windows closed, even with the heater/blower from HVAC going full blast, there is no gas odor. I get it when I open the windows/sunroof and the car is moving, and at freeway speeds it gets fairly thick. I have replaced the gas cap and gas filter, but the odor is still there. Where else should I look? Opening the hood and sniffing around doesn't do much good, it is more of a nebulous smell and I can't pinpoint it. In fact, it is hard to smell under the hood but standing next to the car after parking it you can smell it.

The middle of the three SE-Rs I owned did this. I never found the source. The guy who bought it said the same thing, but he couldn't locate it either, that I ever heard.

My S13 had the gas smell ONE time, but I traced it to a loose clamp on a fuel line under the hood, and tightening it solved the problem.

There are some rubber lines that go from the filler neck to the tank. I would check those out.

Mine had this issue because the fuel rail o-rings that seated it to the manifold were damaged.

check o ring around the gas tank take off that black cap under the backseat and see if you have that big o ring.

look at the lines that go to and from the canister - might be a bunch of unneccessary gas fuming out of the large hose on the bottom of it (just vents into the driver's wheel well.

Those were going to be my first two (2) suggestions. I had the same issue a few years ago.

First I checked that gas tank O-ring under the rear seat, it was fine.

My issue was the rubber line to the filler neck...completely shot. Easy fix.

I bet it is one or the other.

I had a pinhole leak in one of my lines that was spraying gas. I'd check your lines and see if theres a tiny stream of gas coming out somewhere.

Another suggestion:

Fuel pressure regulator. Both of my Nismo units leaked, and raw fuel would be strong as hell in the cabin, but only with the windows down.

damn piece of crap nismo piece of garbage waste of money. I hate those things now and will never use them
