I've been inside two 1994 transmissions and both had the old style gear. At some point they redesigned the gear but I'd guess they ran through their old stock (instead of ditching them) and then switched to the new style. I'm not sure when that was. I'm sure some B14s have seen 5th gear pop-out and I'd bet they had the old style gear. I don't have any clue as to what year might be "safe" to buy and assume no 5th gear pop-out. I make sure the first time the transmission comes out on any FWD pre-B15 car I crack open the case and check 5th gear and replace it if it is the old part. That's the only way to be sure.

You can put the factory LSD in the non-lsd G20 case. My buddy Hybrid_DET did it and it's awesome. The gears are way longer and work beautifully for boost. He got a 96 non-lsd model and it's been good for him for something like 3yrs on about 300whp. You could pm him and ask what it took. I wasn't there when he swapped it over, but it allowed him to use the regular B13 axles and I remember him saying it was extremely easy.

wouldn't you need to swap the lsd side of the case as well to make this work?

Wrong "1. all B13s and B14s 2.0L with 5spds all have LSD (NX2k, Sentra SE-R, and 200SX SE-R)"

Nope the '98 and newer B14 SR 5spd. cars had open diff. ...

Wrong " 5th gear pop out is from worn synchro's, "

Nope Syncros will not cause a pop out problem , the issue is in the syncro coupler sleeve and the teeth on the gear that meshed with the Coupler, that why you can turn it around and fix them and the upgraded parts are stronger and have a limiter so the hub doesnt rub on the gear... Just replacing the syncro will NOT fix a 5th gear popout ...!

and what BenFenner stated .... Also resting a hand on the shifter while in 5th would wear on the rings , so there is a limiter built into the new stuff now ...

Wrong "You can put the factory LSD in the non-lsd G20 case"

You would need the left case half to do that since it is much larger to fit the LSD assy. ...!

ok I see what you're saying...I just never seen the popout with b14s...if nissan is using left over stock, then i think it's more with the '94 model year.

do you have a picture of what to look for and where exactly to look at when you open the tranny case. I took my case off, but i could not identify 5th gear, i know where reverse is though

yes he would, the LSD inner shaft is too long for a non LSD tranny b/c there is no lsd, he would have to use the non lsd inner shaft. I built a hybrid axle for a LSD tranny when I switch over from a open dif.

I'm sorry, my knowledge of anything after '97 SE-R is scarce...I thought there wasnt a 2.0l liter model but the '99 SE-L which was a 2.0L with 5spd that was lsd and a 4dr
i should of been more clear

I'll show you where 5th gear is. Technically there are two gears for 5th (obviously) but you're only interested in the bigger one with the dog teeth that go bad. In the following picture you will find 5th gear on the top of the input gear stack all the way in the top/right corner of this picture.

I have a two 5th gears on my desk for paper weights. One is ruined (5th gear pop out) that came out of my 1994 transmission. The other is my brother's that we replaced preemptively in his 1994 SE-R. His is still good, but it is still the old style. This is one of the parts that go bad. The other part that goes bad is the 5th gear selector ring/collar of which I have one on my desk as well. It has a chewed up side, and a pristine side. I'll take pictures of these and post them up later so you can have a very good idea of what damage to look for in the transmission while you have it open.

You'll also know if you have the new style or old style of gear.

Wait for my pictures and further explanation. For now, if you'd like, you can read over the 5th gear replacement guide I just finished whipping up.
