Thread: Sounds like a box of rocks?!

This is what my problem is I am almost positive. Is it a really big bitch to change? The one place I have never ventured is inside the tranny. I kinda just want to grab a new tranny so I can do a quick swap and worry about the bearing later.

The transmission is one of the least complicated things in your car. No reason to be scared. I could walk you through it by memory no problem. You will need a press to do the input shafts bearing(s) though.

It doesn't wind down or up. It is there one second and gone just as quickly. Weird, I would have thought that the input shaft bearing would make more noise with the clutch engaged rather then when depressed. Granted, I have no idea what I'm talking about. It also makes the box of rocks noise when I'm at a stop light and I am idling with the car out of gear and foot on the brake. The only time it doesn't do it is when the clutch is engaged. I really appreciate the feedback!

there is a little ambiguity here with the clutch "engagement", so just to clarify...

Yours does it sitting at a stop light at idle in neutral with your foot all the way off the clutch? - Mine does this also. (and seeming only under these conditions)

Yours also does it whenever you have the clutch pedal pressed down with your foot? - Mine does not do this, it stops the second I push the clutch pedal down. This I would assume is the TOB. Maybe BOTH your TOB and Input shaft bearing are bad. Is the sound exactly the same under both conditions?

I'm not scared, its just a matter of not being able to have the car on jack stands for more than a day, and lack of access to things like a press. I could get it done, but not in a day like if I just had a tranny to swap in. Maybe I should buy that brand new P11 tranny that wangwang is selling...
