Thread: Am I the only one whose exhaust studs don't like to stay in the head?

Everytime I take these out they always just back right out, instead of the nut just coming off. It's annoying lol. Should I put loctite on them? Was I supposed to in the first place?

lol, happens to everyone, in fact me and my buddies usually take a bet when we get a jdm motor whether or not a stud will come out of the head when i pull the exhaust manifold. haha ive had very very few motors that i had none come out, Usually get at least 1 that will pull out, i just put it back in and tighten it down good and have had no problems ever with any exhaust leaks, Use the newer style metal exhaust gasket as well and you wont have any problems guaranteed.

Again even with the ones that pulled out just put them back in the same spot and ive never had one back out on me or come loose.

use anti-seize on the nuts (not studs) before installing them. I think that's the best way to handle any kind of exhaust related bolts/nuts (along with spark plugs).

im got to try an easy out for a broken head/exhaust stud....i hope it works...

Yah, we all have this problem. I like the anti-seize idea on the nut and nothing special on the block side of the stud (tightening them even a moderate amount seems to ruin the leading threads in the block which sucks). You don't want to loc-tite it just in case one breaks and have to remove it. That happens quite a bit as well.

Yeah I thought about that after I posted this. I've broke a couple before and I'm sure I'd break more if I used loctite.

get new ones then put lock tite...

thats what I do as well. I never had one back out on me.

loctite bad. If you break a stud it will be a pain to remove it with loctite.
