Thread: Setting the Speedo back to 0

I have a '91 B13 and the speedo doesn't like me:



As you can see, even while the gauge cluster is sitting on my couch, it thinks the couch is doing 35mph. Using a small flathead I moved the screw where the speedo cable attaches but it only moved the speedo a very small amount and it immediately went back to where it was. I didn't try to force the issue for fear that I might break something. Anybody know how I can reset this sucker to "0" before I put it back in my car?

Does it start to read when you start moving,or do you have to be going 35 before it starts to move?
Have you tried to remove the needle pointer and adjust it there?
I know someone who changed the faces on theirs and put it back wrong.It did the same thing.

It's your pink ninja causing the problems. You should have put him in a black suit, it would help.

It starts at 35mph and then moves freely from there. Twice now when I have been going just over 80mph (true speed, not indicated), the needle seemed to stick for a sec and as a result got worse. I could have just been seeing things. The speedo reacts now like 35mph is 0 and starts and works from there as a starting point.



I'll have to let my Goddaughter know she needs to whip up a new one!

I have the plastic face off, to remove the needle do I just pull straight out? Right now when I physically move the needle down to 0 and then release it, it automatically rotates back to 35.

I had the same problem on my b13. The needle was at 10mph tho.

All you have to do is remove the face (clear plastic part) and remove the needle. The black plastic part comes off of the center of the needle and then you can remove the needle form its "post" or pivot. Then turn the needle by hand backwards past the point of 0 mph, it will spring back. Now place the needle back on with it exactly at zero or a little before zero and have it so the spring is almost forcing it onto the needle rest spot.

I did this exact procedure on mine and it worked out great and is as accurate as it was form the factory.

Does the black center cap just pull straight off? I tried decently tugging on it with a cloth and pliers and it wouldn't budge. Or do I pry it?

Get underneath it with a small screwdriver (emphasis on small) and get under one side it is very pliable. Get one side off and you can then remove it from there with your hand. Then yank on the needle (do not break it) it will come straight off.

Thanks, it took a bit more effort than I expected but eventually got it off and it is back at 0 for the first time in a year. Once I get my cluster lights sorted out I'll test it out and see if it stays true!
