...I used a stock STi muffler I found when I put my first (stock) engine in... I/H/E with 2.5" exhaust; header, 2.5" b-pipe, 18" resonator, then muffler. I still got the seat-of-the-pants acceleration difference, with only a little bit of noise - sounded good when I romped on it, yet quiet enough to NOT set off alarms in parking garages.
This time, it's I/H/E with 3" exhaust, 24" resonator, and Thermal R&D 3" muffler w/ resonated tip. It's REALLY loud (sets off car alarms in parking garages, etc.) but it's not raspy. It would definitely be deeper if the resonated tip's steel filling was not rusted out to bits.
My friend's car has a GReddy SP1 on it (I/H/E) with no resonator or cat, and it sounds really good, really deep. It's lots of intake noise, and just enough exhaust bass to remind you that you got one on your car
.
If making your own isn't an option, I'd get either the HKS or the Greddy SP2.
