x2 .. Make sure you look down into the plug holes. If the motor is stored in a way that water can get into the cylinders the motor will most likely be junk.

This motor was stored with no spark plugs

After cracking the head I also noticed the open valves were junk along with the valve guides and seats that were exposed to the water. For reference this motor was stored outside for a year with no plugs in it.

I've seen a few motors like that, not good. But the header is still fully sealed, the only thing removed is the upper and lower oil pans. From what I can think the bearings would be the biggest concern, but seeing as it's open now shouldn't be too big of a deal to replace.

I would worry about rust on the lower cyl walls, but I would worry more about all the dirt and dust and grass and rodents that could have accumulated around the crank/girdle area.

Bottom line, pick it up if it is a good deal, disassemble the bottom end, replace bearings, clean motor, check bores, if necessary get a light hone and possibly new rings.

You might want to do that anyway, freshen the bottom end to damn near new.

New rings, bearings and a cleaning with a gasket kit for $100 from courtesy. Assuming the longblock intitial price is cheap you could have remanned longblock for $700.

rings $110
bearings $90
hone if necessary $100
gasket kit $120
motul moto wash $30

fresh new long block priceless

Awesome. This is exactly what I was looking for. Seems like common knowledge but my brain's been fried for the past few weeks at work that I need a good push to get running on my own.

thanks for all the advice!
