I say starter as well. If your starter is in the car and has two bolts already then maybe you have the wrong bolt in there. I would take them out and compare them to your bastard bolt.
The bolt with the pointy tip is for the driver's side transmission mount. At least that's where it was on my car, and that's what Greg V sells when you ask for that bolt.
Maybe they used another one in the rear of the cross member, but not on my car... =/
Well then that needs clairifcation - did you take out the engine to replace the clutch? if so, then by all means he would take off the a/c - not the alternator mind you, but the a/c for sure he would.

There is a possibility one could mix up the rear bracket bolts with the a starter bolt. Maybe you have one of them mixed up, and while it threads into the starter, it might only be in a few threads. Can you see the backs of the starter bolts protruding out of the threaded holes in the starter? Because they should have a mm or two sticking out.
