here you go: http://www.sr20-forum.com/showthread.php?t=725

i believe on the other site there's the information about the number or letters in the VIN saying whether it's LSD or not.

edit: i didn't mean to sound like a dick above. and now i see that you're trying to find a way that's NOT crawling under the car. hope this helps.

I don't think your a dick, but you're right about the vin. I remember reading about it on one of the forums. I'm not that much of a noob, just was trying to get a fast, correct answer. I'll try a search on the old forum, and if need be just call the guy up again and check it out in person. Thanks, and if you find or know that link, it would be well appreciated.

the other site talks about the part number on the tranny. not sure that this will help you but here it is:

if there is a V at the end, then it has a VLSD.

if it has an A at the end, it is an open diff.

Hmm..that explains why my trans (w/LSD) took something like 7.5-8 pints of fluid vs. the 5.9 pints spec'd for other B13's. Just changed it yesterday, was wondering why the '91 B13 had 3 transmission codes listed, each with varying amounts of fluids.

i called infiniti about a year ago, three different dealers, they said the VIN number doesnt tell if the tranny is LSD or open diff, they said you need the part # off the tranny itself

well then that solves it. the only way to identify an LSD tranny is:

A. visually as described in the How To section.
or
B. by the serial number on the tranny method posted previously in this thread.
or
C. getting it out of a car that is KNOWN to have an LSD in it. and hoping that the original tranny was in the car.

That's pretty much what I found, only by reversing the VIN into a model where the LSD was always included (and hasn't been pulled).

I couldn't find the trans serial number yesterday, do you know where on the trans it is located? It was obvious which one in my book matched, just because of the additional fluid required to get to the fill level, the other two were 1-2 pints lower.

I ran the VIN decode at this link to confirm the model (which I already know, but thought others might find useful, since some '91 non-SE-R's can be made to look pretty close to one)
http://www.autocheck.com/consumers/car-facts/vin-numbers/free-vin-decode.do

Next I have to decide if I really want a NISMO LSD, which I came close to buying in Dec. Is the old unit worth anything to anyone? The reason I ask is if I pull it, it will be of no use to me. I'd think someone with right trans w/o LSD (maybe pulled?) would have use for one.
