Attn: N/A Track Junkies - Oil Weight Question
Two part question here:

What weight synthetic oil are you running in your NA SR20 on the track - and why did you choose that weight?

I just run 5w30 Valvoline Synthetic ... Why ... I guess I really see no reason to change from what is recommended ....never had any issues before using 5w-30 on the track in my other cars ...

'98 Sentra SE , stock internals and just track days 20 minute sessions .. I always change the oil before every track day ...

i would recommend a 10-30.

but thats just me.

on my turbo car i run like a 15-40 and a bit heavier in the summer.

5w-30 is very thin, and if you have a old motor why not make it last a bit longer. imho.

I agree. I'm between 5W30 and 10W30.
Then again does it even make much of a difference? Isn't the 5 and 10 part just the viscosity at start up and the 30 the viscosity at operating temp?

I'd look at the higher temp cst ratings on the oil rather than just the oil weight rating.

I personally use a 0w40 or 5w40 on my jdm pulsar gti-r.

for example
oil, weight, 40 deg C Cst, 100 deg C cst
Mobil1, 0w40, 78.3, 14 <-- previously used
Shell Rotella T Synthetic, 5w40, 95, 15.5 <-- my current oil, this oil doesn't seem to break down as quick as the mobil
Esso XD-3, 0w40, 87, 15.2

I have compiled a long list of numbers but I don't know how its going to turn out when I cut and paste it from excel onto here.

Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w40 95 15.5
Shell Rotella T Synthetic 15w40 120 15.5
Mobil1 0w40 78.3 14
Mobil1 10w30 62 10
Mobil1 5w30 64.8 11.3
Mobil1 5w50 105 17.3
Mobil1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 63.1 11
Amsoil 0w30 56.6 10.3
Amsoil 0w20 49.1 9
Amsoil 5w30 60.7 10.8
Amsoil euro 5w40 79.7 13.7
Motul 300V Power 5w40 80.8 13.8
Motul 300V Chrono 10w40 89.5 14
Motul 300V Power Racing 5w30 65 11
Esso XD-3 0w40 87 15.2
Esso XD-3 0w30 69 12.2
Elf Excellium 10w50 119.7 17.9
Elf Excellium 5w50 115 18.2
Elf Excellium GM 5w30 70 11.8
Elf Excellium XLL 5w40 83.93 13.82
Elf Excellium Full Tech 0w30 68.45 12.18
Elf Sport TXI 5w40 85.11 14.05
Elf Excellium NF 5w40 85.11 14.05

Castrol doesnt list the 40 degreee C Cst value, only the 100

German Castrol. 0-30 only at autozone afaik. Must say "Made in Germany" on back label. They boys on BITOG go nuts for this stuff and it was great in my VE. Blackstone report was very complimentary.

In order of preference
1. Redline 10w30.
2. Mobil 1 5w40 European formula
3. Mobile 1 5w30 extended life formula
4. Castrol Syntec 0w30 (Made in Germany) AKA GC

I am a NASA HPDE instructor and also a 3 time NASA-X "E" class champion.
I have put a lot of track miles on this car and its still in excellent shape. It is driven very hard and has never had an oil related issue.

I prefer the Rotella 5w40 in my car. I will play with diff oils but the rotella just doesn't break down as fast as many other synthetics I have tried. Castrol makes really really good oil too.

I plan on using my regular Castrol Syntec 5w-50 with the right amount of STP added. I have race experience with STP and I know it helps. Besides, at 340,000 miles, I need all the help I can get.
