Electronic Water Pump
Hey guys, I need some of your unending wisdom. I have two EWP's, and a Davies Craig controller. One of my pumps is a Meziere, and the other is a Davies Craig. I found the controller used and the guy tossed in a brand new pump, and I had already bought the Meziere pump. So I have two questions...

First, should I keep the Davies craig pieces together? Does it even matter?

Second, I've always heard that a person should run the water pump between the thermostat and the rad, but it would make more sense to me that the pump be situated between the top of the rad and the upper water neck. I know this causes some space/hose issues, but it seems to me that this would give better flow and circulation while the thermostat is closed, since it's closer to the factory water pump location. Any thoughts on this? I'm sure I can find hoses at the parts store that will allow me to situate the pump, I'm just thinking of getting good flow within the block.

Finally, should there be a thermostat at all? It seems to me that there should be, to keep warmth within the block and prevent cold running situations. Am I right there?

I thought you don't run a Thermostat when your going electro water pump.

I've heard both. Some say keep it, just drill out the pintle, others say ditch it and let the controller do the work. I personally think it would be tough to get it up to running temp if it's moving and the tstat is constantly open. No?

Char, you're thinking like I am. However, I wasn't thinking of moving it upstream past the tstat, I was thinking of moving it downstream past the radiator, and putting it on the upper radiator hose. That would make it circulate water within the head and block, but it would make use of the thermostat as the factory intended. I wish more people had used these!

I see what you're trying to do dr.fowler but it won't work. As Char has said, the thermostat causes you trouble. The thermostat opens up a return to the block. While the thermostat is closed there is no passage for water to go through the radiator so water just circulates inside the head. If you put the water pump before the radiator like you're trying to do it would be just like putting it after the radiator. It wouldn't do anything for you until the thermostat opens up.

The quick/easy/dirty solution to this has already been mentioned, which is to drill holes in the thermostat or remove it completely.

Ideally you would like to have the water pump in the same place in the system as factory. Is there not a hard line running behind the engine you can tap into that will produce factory results? I'm not that familiar and don't have my FSM with me. Maybe those lines are only for the heater core?

If I were you I'd research the hard lines going behind the engine and see if tapping into one of them is a better idea.

If that doesn't pan out, I'd be considering modifying the block-off plate, or if all else fails just remove the thermostat and rely on the controller to get the job done.
