Help me diagnose my clutch issue: pics inside
The other day I get in the car to go to work and I couldn't get the car into gear when it was running. I rolled out of the driveway backwards in neutral and went to put the car into 1st and...no go. I had to turn the car off put it into 1st and then start it to get it back up the driveway. Even though I had the clutch pedal pressed down when I started it the car was still creeping forward..not fully but it was definietly moving forward. I figured somehow the clutch wasn't disengaging so I took my truck to work. Later that week I check the obvious: the cable, the arm, clutch pedal etc. but everything looked fine. Well today I just finished dropping the trans and pulled off the clutch. The disc is a little banged up, there are a couple of cracks and a piece broke off from the disc but I don't think that would keep the clutch from disengaging. Unless that piece lodged itself between the flywheel and the disk, which might have happened. Is it possible that the fingers on the pressure plate are worn out and are not strong enough to release the pressure plate? Anyway I thought that I would ask in here before I went and bought a new clutch setup. By the way...this is an ACT HD/SS clutch setup.

You already have your diagnosis. The cracked area that secured the spring in is the reason.

you need a new disc an resurface the pressure plate if not ...new clutch set up

I figured as much but I couldn't grasp when the damaged disk would not allow the clutch to disengage....I guess some parts were rubbing against eachother not allowing the driveline to disconnect.

so you think that the pressure plate is still good? Can you get the pressure plate resurfaced...I never heard of anyone doing that? I would really just like to buy a B15 disk and be done with it.

I dont see that piece being broken off being the cause, it would prolly chatter but I dont think it would cause it to not engage. How does your flywheel look? Has it been resurfaced a few times?

This is supposedly the old ACT design that is failing you. The part has been updated akaik. B15 disc might be the ticket for you. Not sure about the pressure plate but in my experience the are more resilient.

call me a bad driver or a cheap bastid if you guys want,But i've gone thru currently 3 clutch disks that havehad the spring pop out (usually happens due to beasting on the clutch pedal ahhahaha)since ive owned the sentra.(about a year already) all the disks i was using were used ones due to low funds and desprate needs.(First one was oem replacement,Second was ACT 6puck,Third was stock replacement).....i finally went and got a brand new PPL,B15 disk,Release bearing and clips.Unfortunatly i think my cable got is bad(stretched) and since it was a new disk which requires about 500 miles of breakin period, I don't think it was being broken in correctly sinc ethe cable is stretched and made pretend as if i was dropping the clutch ...**knock* on wood its still good.

Sorry for talking too much im having a few drinks =D

I agree with you...I can't understand it either. Engagement is not the problem, the problem was that the clutch would not disengage (pedal down) to get the car into gear from neutral into a gear. The flywheel looks good as it has only been resurfaced once. My thought is that something was wedging somewhere not allowing the pressure plate to release from the disk......

I had 3 clutches go on me just like that. My solution to the problem an unsprung clutch disc. Haven't had issues since then.
