Marcus, what old tranny are you going to get rid of?

It is common knowledge that our trannies have loud bearings when warmed up and in neutral with the clutch engaged, kinda sounds like a lopey clack clack clack clack. Doesnt necessarily mean your trans is shot. Maybe try changing the fluid out and use a mix of 3 quarts of 75w90 either conventional or synthetic, however synthetics normally are worse when it comes to the noise and then 1 quart of some valvoline 85w140. I wouldnt suggest for you to go with a full heavy weight oil but a 3-1 mix should help quiet the trans down some.

Its not a throwout bearing issue for sure. Again when using especially a synthetic 75w90 most older b13/b14 trannies ive heard make noise in neutral w/ clutch engaged.

^I just made an edit to my post. The one I have on the car now if I don't fix it.

^My car gets mouse quite when the clutch is engaged. I just wasn't sure if it would lock up over a period of time. Just trying to play it safe. This is my 'main' daily driver now. I sold me other car so I need this one to be sound.

Reese, unless you want to tear into your tranny to replace it I would just find a solid replacement tranny with no input shaft play. That's what I did. The input shaft noise in my old tranny had been there for over 2 years and even though I didn't have other issues with it the noise was just plain annoying and getting worse. Old Guy is right, gotta crack the case open & remove the gear stacks from the front. Spare tranny time bro....

That noise isnt just the bearing making noise though, its the gears and everything turning while in neutral. You can have a trans that has little to no input shaft play and still have that noise. Like I said if you havent changed your fluid in a while you might try doing a mix like I said and see if it quiets and goes away. I know when I run straight 85w140 its quiet as a mouse in neutral. Again dont recommend you to use straight heavy weight but a mix as i said. Just use conventional so its cheap. Trust me your trans isnt going to grenade from that noise there. Ive yet to see an sr trans input shaft bearing grenade itself completely. Again maybe give it a shot before going through replacing the trans or replacing the bearings.

^My swap has less than 100 miles on it. Everything is pretty much new with fresh fluids everywhere. The car has 'never' been this loud. I understand it will have a little noise, but again, it has progressed since Sunday. I'll double check the tranny fluid level, but it has 4 quarts of fresh gear oil.

^Very annoying lol. I'll probably just swap it out soon. Did you try changing the fluid? If so, did it help with the noise?

Thought about changing the fluid, had MT90 and figured if everything still works just deal with it until I blow up the DE. The way I think going to a heavier gear oil is a band aid solution and will only last for so long. May work for others, just not in my street /track VE setup that's almost done. I need reliability now more than ever and don't want to cut corners if I don't have to. If I were you I would think about just doing the tranny swap and be done with it when you have time. If you plan on upgrading your tranny for your big bore VE build consider these 2 options. Rebuild the one that you're taking out and replace anything that's needed or just get a low mileage B15 tranny and call it good.

My car started doing exactly what you're describing, and I diagnosed it as one of the two input shaft bearings. Not sure which. Since I was going to replace them, I just replaced all four bearings in the transmission at the same time. yes, you have to open the transmission itself to replace any of the bearings.

After replacing all four bearings, my noise went away. =D

Did you switch to a different gear oil than you were using before? I want to say I started noticing the noise shortly after switching to Redline Heavy Shockproof. The b14 moves so little, that I really have no idea if this is getting worse or changing at all, it does still make the noise though. (notice this thread is from a few years ago)

I have noticed what Ashton said, all sr20s are pretty loud at idle with the gears spinning. It seems like some are louder than others... I wonder if it is a sign of wear on the input shaft bearing, but really isnt a huge deal for quite some time? Could be why many people destroy trannies while others do not (movement of the gear stack from the worn bearing, that is).

^I do have a low mileage B13 tranny out of a 93 NX2000 that I was saving for the big bore. It only has about 90K on it.

^Yes. I switched from redline MT-90 to some valvoline gear oil.

^Maybe I should switch back?
