Input Shaft Bearing
After my car gets nice and warmed up, I am hearing a sort of grinding noise from the engine bay. It goes away when I push in the clutch and engage the TOB. Is this almost surely my transmission input shaft bearing? if so, do I have to pull the whole tranny apart to replace it? or just drop the tranny and do it in the bellhousing?

I can't go to the convention with this issue...

Sounds like a bad TOB to me. I had the same problem and that is what it was.

How would it be the TOB if the sound only happens when the TOB is NOT engaged, and goes away when it IS engaged.

How's your clutch cable doing? Check it to make sure that it's not overtightened. It might be causing the TOB to be 1/4 engaged, and when you press the clutch pedal it goes away because it becomes fully engaged.

good call. I will try a little looser and see if that helps.


Any more advice guys?

..... my mothers v6 eclipse gt makes noise when clutch isnt in... when th peddle is pushd in it goes away..

Throw out bearing, an worn don pressure plate is her problem... sounds like u got the same situation

In order to replace the input shaft bearing, you need to split the case and remove all of the gear stacks from the front half. The bearing is under a retainer.

^If this is the case, I'm just going to put in my spare tranny and sell my 'currently' noisey one for cheap. Not sure I want to do all of this. I have a fresh VE swap that only has about 100 miles or so on it and the tranmssion only makes noise when the clutch pedal is 'not' pressed in. It goes away soon as I press it. I noticed it getting a little noise after church this past Sunday. After doing some more searching on the OG forum, it sounds like it is my input shaft bearing. Do we have a how to for this?

^Ok, all of this is saying it is the input shaft bearing. My TOB only has about 100 miles on it, and the shaft was greased very well. I'm guessing I need to replace this bearing. Who has done it and what all is invovled?
