Should be safe to 400whp, as proven by many SR20 owners. Some even say it's safe to 500whp, but I think that it's more plausible to 400whp.

If you plan on achieving more than 400whp, it's in your best interests to upgrade your internals, to include studs/gasket, for longevity purposes.

if i was going for 'big numbers' and had a de/det that wasn't a gtir i'd get the mazworks studs, bit of work to get them in but they are monsters

(being at 12mm on the gtir there isn't enough metal there to retap to suit the 12.5mm stud)

do the tomei, greedy studs have the same, never seen them ?

this came up before on sr20forum, think it was bigtoe who was emailing them at the same time as me, the guy at arp he was discussing it with was saying they had nothing to suit the application when given a drawing. The guy i was talking to was saying they knew of no issues with the sr20 studs, they are not designed to bottom out, 2-3 times diametre of thread depth is adequate in an ali head, but he did quote a higher torque than is noted on the packaging iirc (80lbft instead of 70lbft with moly lube)

dont know if bigtoe carrried on with discussing anything tbh.

Yup,

Bigtoe got ARP to admit they had used the wrong drawings when they made the SR20 headbolts, they should be bottoming out designs like the AEBS, but they got it wrong, for anywhere else in the engine I would be happy to use their bolts, but not for the head.

Very interesting guys. I am using the head studs right now from ARP and I don't know if I like them. I had a little oil starvation issue so I have torn the engine down to fix it and I was thinking of getting the stock head bolts if they will handle 500whp without issue. The ARP headstuds had some problems coming out and the overall quality is not the best.

Hopefully the stock head bolts handle 500whp. Someone chime in before I throw them in my vet if it shouldn't be done.

all the other studs for the sr have that feature aswell then.

excluding arp/jun

do you know where it is going with the arps design if anywhere ?

there aren't other options for the gtir anymore, the nismo studs are like rocking horse poop

There was a comment about using bottled water. It is no better then tap, might be even worse to tell you the truth. Your going to want to use distilled water. Over here in GA they go for about 99cents a gallon. GOooood AND CHEAP.

Thanks for posting up your findings man. Will help others when it comes time for their own motor projects.

i think as of now until arp cleans up thier act with the head studs.. the aebs are definetly the way to go, for strenght and cost. i have no problem telling you guys that stock head bolts will hold 400whp. but going over the 450 mark is questionable. down here i know of two sr20det rwd sitting on above 500 whp, using stock head bolts.. but hey.. you dont know when they are going to pop, or not. so like i said the aebs are the best option right now. the rest of the arp line up for the sr20 are great with no problems. but thier head studs are crap and i will not waste anytime wondering about how much they can hold, when knowing that they are the wrong design.
