MORE transmission woes...
So my car had been making a faint rattling noise which we attributed to a throw-out bearing. Even though it had been replaced not even three months prior. Finally, the car decided it didn't want to go into any of the gears anymore. I had the tranny opened up and it turned out to be a spring on the clutch disk, which was also only a few months old (B15 disc).

So I had the flywheel replaced, along with new clutch disc, TOB, and clips. After driving the car for a few miles (when it finally warmed up), it began to make a fairly loud rattling/humming sound during idle and while driving the car, although the sound does go away when the clutch pedal is pushed down.

So at this point, the only other thing I could assume is the problem is the input shaft bearing or something internal. I'm completely clueless and just at a point where I'm might as well start looking for another tranny because I don't want to worry about the car leaving my stranded once again.

It would be much appreciated it anyone can shine some light on this issue. Keep in mind that the aforementioned items have been replaced, have made sure the there's sufficient gear oil in tranny (lightweight shockproof), and the clutch cable has been properly adjusted.

I think the car hates me because I've been considering selling her...

did you change the pilot bushing when you did the clutch job? does it shift fine? does it grind when you shift? it kinda sounds like the pilot bushing except for the clutch it part.. i think it should still make noise.. but if you replaced the flywheel / clutch / pp / tb you should of replaced the pilot bushing, i would atleast check into it the next time u have stuff tore apart.. they're easy to remove by using a bolt with some black tap on it to match the size of the bushing (tightly) an some grease.. squirt grease into the hole then use the bolt / hammer to pop it out.. its often reffered to as "the hydrolic method" ofcourse u could chisel it out to.. the only reason i would think it was the tranny is cause it makes sound when the clutch is in.. what does it do when not in gear clutch out?

I don't believe that the input shaft is long enough to enter the pilot bushing. Very few transmissions still use the pilot bushing for support.

The SR20DE FWD transmission main shaft does not come close to touching the pilot bushing.

The problem is the main shaft bearing is bad. You will have to take the tranny apart to fix this.

The car doesn't have the pilot bearing because there's a VE in there, so the regular DE bearing won't work. THe car is shifting and driving just fine. The noise is pretty much present anytime the clutch is not pushed down, whether it's idling or driving.

See above.

So is that what it sounds like to you? Am I better off looking for a P11 tranny at this point??

If your car is Turbo get a B15-P11 tranny.

If it is NA change the imput shaft bearing. I guess if you are in there just change them all and put it back in.

It's just a VE. And may be up for sale soon. I'm unfortunately not able to have so much downtime with the car to have the tranny repaired, so I think I'm just better off looking for another B13 tranny at the moment and then either selling the tranny as is or getting it repaired.

In the meantime, do you think I'm ok driving the car in it's current condition? It drives and shifts perfectly fine for the time being.

Thanks Miko.
